Man jailed for wife murder attempt

A man who tried to murder his wheelchair-bound wife by smothering her with a pillow has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

John Millar attacked 65-year-old Phyllis Millar "for no apparent reason" at their Edinburgh home on June 28 last year. The five-minute ordeal only came to an end when she managed to fight him off.

Millar suggested to police that he wanted to end the suffering of his wife, who has multiple sclerosis, but she told officers she had never said she wanted to die and was content with her life.
