Titanic is launched

THE Titanic sails into Perth Theatre in April when Perth Amateur Operatic Society embark on a fabulous voyage with the Tony Award-winning musical of that name.

Tickets for ‘Titanic: the Musical’ go on sale on Monday, January 7, and the production, which won five Tony Awards including Best Musical in 1997, runs at full steam ahead from Friday, April 4, until Saturday, April 12, with a matinee on the 12th.

The Society is keen to point out that the musical is not based on the James Cameron film which came out the same year, with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, but is closer to the 1958 film ‘A Night to Remember’ starring Kenneth More.

It tells the true story of the Titanic’s maiden voyage from departure in Southampton to the sinking in the Atlantic by an iceberg. The show touches on issues such as class, immigration and mankind's vulnerability in the face of nature.

The story follows passengers and crew members who actually existed and were aboard the Titanic in 1912. This is giving the cast members a unique opportunity to research the true backgrounds of the various characters they portray, and is making the whole thing a much more personal experience than in the usual musical comedies or operettas.

The cast already knows who is going to ‘survive’ and who isn’t!

At the helm for this exciting new adventure is the society’s new production team of director Ewan Campbell and musical director Allan Kelman. Set designer is Robin Peoples, and the company is intrigued as to how Robin is going to fit a cruise ship and an iceberg onto the Perth Theatre stage!

Tickets priced from £10 will be available at Perth Theatre or Perth Concert Hall telephone 0845 612 6324 or email tickets@horsecross.co.uk
