EVERY time the Olympic torch pops up on television screens, Perth businessman Gordon Dow takes a special interest.
His Spectraglass firm on the Fair City’s Inveralmond Industrial Estate crafted the protective glass which ensured the flame resisted the best efforts of demonstrators to douse it.
The local firm has been manufacturing glass for the Olympic torch since Lake Placid, when Robin Cousin was a skating sensation at the sporting event.
Spectraglass is the only company left in this country with the glass engineering capability to turn out the product required by the Olympic movement.
“There are half a dozen torches and they even stay lit on planes. They are completely safe,” said Gordon.
“It’s just a pity we couldn’t have Spectraglass on the lamps as that would have been great advertising!”
