Strath see off Stoneywood

STRATHEARN CC’s Senior Section (sponsored by The Cherrybank Inn) maintained their promising start to the season by registering a 39-run win over promotion challengers Stoneywood Dyce XI last weekend.

Put into bat on a pitch still damp from the previous days rain, Strathy were tied down by tight bowling from the visitors along with wickets falling at crucial times. Six of the top seven batsmen reached double figures but none scored more than 30. A final total of 164-9 is normally 30-40 runs below par at Doo’cot and with the pitch drying out at a rate of knots, Stoneywood made good progress towards their target.

Despite losing both openers on 43, they had progressed to 95-3 with 17 overs remaining and were looking favourites until a string of well timed bowling changes by skipper Patterson saw the game turnaround. Tight bowling & fielding saw the visitors panic and within the space of ten overs, Strathy had dismissed Stoneywood for 125, with Duncan Marsh taking 3-14 to complete an important victory.

Sunday’s rain affected fixture with Perthshire XI at the North Inch saw the hosts dismissed for 92 in 30 overs, with 14 year old Michael Murphie cleaning up the tail with 3-14. Heavy rain seemed certain to scupper the fixture over tea but a willingness to complete the fixture by both captains saw the visitors reach the target of 93 with three wickets in hand, Simon Edwards batting sensibly to remain unbeaten on 23 at the end.

This weekend’s fixtures see Strathearn look to maintain their fine start to the season when they entertain St Modans at Doo’cot Park (players meet at 12.5pm). Whilst on Sunday, Strathearn XI make the relatively short trip to visit Rossie Priory XI in Division 2 with players asked to meet at Doo’cot Park at midday. On Tuesday evening there is a 2nd round 3 Counties Cup tie at home to Perthshire (6.15 start) for which a team shall be arranged over the weekend.
