Strathearn finally feel defeat

STRATHEARN – who are sponsored by the Cherrybank Inn – lost their 100 per cent. record at the weekend when they suffered a 17-run defeat at home to St Modans.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first in the afternoon sun, the Strathy openers bowled tidily to restrict the scoring on a very good pitch.

Both openers had gone by the time 40 was on the board, bringing pro Craig Matthew to the wicket.

The home side were made to pay heavily as he gradually upped the tempo whilst riding his luck to guide his side to 183 for five by the end of the 45 overs.

Despite the lower order’s determined efforts, Strathearn were finally dismissed in the penultimate over for 166.

Sunday’s fixture with Rossie Priory XI at the Priory was a high-scoring encounter with nearly 500 runs being scored between the sides.

Strathearn XI batted first and racked up 250 for five in their 45 overs, with the highlight being Richard Kirkman’s first senior century for the club.

He helped the visitors build from a shaky start and set a hefty target for the home side to chase as he finished the innings undefeated on 108.

Rossie Priory made a good fist of chasing the target with opener Bruce Stephens being dominant batsman, scoring 80 before falling to Murphie.

The Rossie middle order all made decent contributions but they came up short by 16 runs in an entertaining affair.

On Tuesday evening, Strathearn progressed to the semi-finals of the 3 Counties Cup with a comfortable victory over Perthshire.

A late flurry of runs at the end took their score to 117 for five after 20 overs, with McIntosh’s 61 not out being the main contribution.

This weekends fixtures see Strathearn look to get back to winning ways when they entertain Dundee High School FPs XI at Doo’cot Park (players meet at 12.15pm).

On Sunday, Strathearn XI are at home to Brechin, with players asked to meet at Doo’cot Park for 12.15pm.
