AUCHTERARDER Speedway star William Lawson is celebrating becoming the Edinburgh Monarchs’ number one after some impressive results at the start of the season.
The 21-year-old told PA Sport that his promotion from number four was the culmination of years of endeavour.
He said: “It’s really good, I don’t quite know how to explain it. I put in a lot of hard work as well as a lot of money on my bike.”
William believes he has what it takes to guide the Monarchs to real success now he’s in the big time spotlight, adding: “It’s a big responsibility but I’m up to it. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
William started his riding career in the Annandale club’s second tier before leaving for Newcastle where he rode for the Newcastle Gems in the Conference and the Diamonds in the Premier League.
Last year, he spent half the season riding full-time for the Wolverhampton Wolves and William believed his development really took shape there.
“The riders down there are in a league of their own, their top class,” he explained.
Having now secured the number one spot at Edinburgh William is desperate for success. With half the season still left, he believes the club’s recent run of good form could see them earn silverware.
William reflected: “We nearly won in Reading last week and we’ve been winning a lot of races this season. I think we can win the league.”
The Monarchs are at Annandale Fridays at 7.30pm.
