Hockey: Mixed fortunes for Shire teams

LAST Saturday, the Men's indoor team played at the Bell's Sports Centre.

In a close first game, Glasgow University scraped through 9-7. Scott Turkington scored a hat trick, Michael Robertson got two and Andrew Sutherland one, and young Alan Thom scored his first goal for the club.

Perthshire Coupar Cabs drew four each with Azzurri Kelburne, in a game they should have won.

In the final match, Shire were 8-2 down at the break against ADTI Aberdeen University.

A spirited second half performance saw Perth run the students close.

However, they had left themselves just too much to do and the match finished 11 – 8.

The team sits in fourth place on five points in National League Division Four and now has a five week break, with two matches on January 25 in Dundee.

The Ladies 1st XI had a convincing five – nil win against St Andrew's University II at Auchterarder.

The home side was four goals up at the break, playing excellent hockey.

Unfortunately, the dominance wasn't sustained in the second half. Jane Ogilvie scored a hat trick and Ialene Mitchell and young Louise Campbell got one each.

The team is top of Midland's Division One, but still has six postponed games to play.

In their first game for a month, the Ladies 2nd XI played well, but lost 1-0 against St Andrew's University III with the only goal coming ten minutes from time.

The Ladies Indoor side is the only team in action this weekend, when they travel to DISC on Sunday.

At 10am, Perthshire play Quasar and then at 11.50am, Haddington are the opponents.

The team should take heart from their first pair of matches having secured a win and a draw, however, Haddington are currently top on six points and Quasar bottom with zero, but a full six points is very possible.

Last weekend Perthshire U14 Mixed B & C teams played some indoor matches at DISC.

It was a great experience for the teams with the players obviously enjoying themselves.

Youth coaching restarts week beginning January 12.

Men's indoor training restarts on Wednesday, January 6 in the Auchterarder School games hall from 7.30–9.30pm and the Ladies section start at the Bell's Sports Centre the day before from 7.30–9pm. Outdoor training at Strathallan School commences on February 4.

There will be a Mixed Boxing Day game starting at 1pm at Auchterarder. Anyone old and young is invited along; simply turn up midday at the Cherrybank Inn car park for a lift or at the pitch side about 12.30pm.

U18's charged £1 and adults £2.
