Perth Volleyball League news Jan 23

SUNDAY’S Recreational League games at Bell's Sports Centre showed a number of close calls and a spattering of easy wins.

First on court one was Ian McGrath's Motley Crew against Alice Eade's Kinross Boys' and Girls' Brigade with the Crew running riot in a 25–4; 25–14 win. Garry Birrell's Hitting Bricks played another Kinross side, Scotrange II on court two. The first set was evenly matched with Kat Thomson's Kinross youngsters just pipping Bricks 25-22. The second set was close with Scotrange leading 15–10 at full time.

Craig Skicko's Dunfermline Phoenix were next on court one hoping to keep their championship challenge on track against Ian Graham's Mongrels. The Fifers deserved their first set win, 25–17, but the second set saw a stiffer challenge from Mongrels with Dunfermline ucky to finish 14–13 ahead at the final whistle. Hitting Bricks played Kinross BGB on court two with Bricks finding it easy going by two sets to nil.

Scotrange played Motley Crew, who had the best of the opening flurries but a run of six points set Scotrange up to win 25–21. The second set was nip and tuck with the score showing 13 points each with two minutes remaining. The decision went the Kinross side's way by a narrow 16–14.

Ray McIntosh and his Aberfeldy side took on Martin Blacklaws' PE teachers with the teachers taking the first set 25–18. The second set looked like going the teachers' way when a spirited spell saw the Breadalbane team score five points without reply to lead 16–15 at full time.

John Booth's league leading Kinross BB team opened their evening's fixtures against Douglas Ogilvie's Tayside Police. The BB side showed no mercy to the league newcomers and recorded victory 25–9; 25–9. Meanwhile on court two, Dunfermline took on Anne Condliffe's Tay Pearls. The Fife side had a win in the first set 25–11 but Pearls opened the second set in fine form taking six points. Pearls kept ahead to lead 18–15 at full time and deny the Fife side full points.

The penultimate game on court one turned out to be the closest game of the evening between Aberfeldy and Tay Pearls. Aberfeldy had set point at 24–20 but Pearls came back and soon the set was poised at 26 points each. The Aberfeldy side scored the next two vital points to take the first set. The second set was again close and it was probably fair that it finished eight points each at full time. Kevan McShea's See Me played Tayside Police with the Police showing more stability in their play overall but still See Me finished on top to win 25–13; 25–8.

The final game on court one was between Mongrels and See Me. See Me led for most of the first set but two runs of five points put Mongrels in the driving seat to win 25–17. The second set again had See Me in front and this time they stayed ahead to lead 20–15 at full time.
