THE Perth and Kinross Schools Badminton Championships were held at Bell’s Sports Centre.
The championship tournament ran in U14, U16 and U19 age groups within singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
This event is one of the best attended within the school sport events calendar.
More than 200 pupils from eight schools attended on the day. Schools present were Perth Academy, Perth High School, St. John’s Academy, Perth Grammar School, Pitlochry High School, Breadalbane Academy, Kinross High School and Blairgowrie High School.
The event was a qualifier for the Scottish Schools Championships to be held at Bell’s Sports Centre in March 2010.
RESULTS: U14 age group, girls singles – Rosemary Anderson, Perth High (runner–up – Elspeth Young, Kinross High; boys singles – Paul Jarvie, St John’s Academy (Cameron Ritchie, Perth High); girls doubles – Caroline McPherson/Robyn Gallacher, Pitlochry High (A Shearer/K Walton, Perth Grammar); boys doubles – Cameron Ritchie/Ryan Martin, Perth High (Steven Laurie/Paul Jarvie, St John’s Academy); mixed doubles – Rosemary Anderson/Ruaidhre Forrester, Perth High (Elspeth Young/Calum Baker, Kinross High).
U16s: Girls singles – Kirsty Irvine, Perth High (Kirsty Butt, Perth High); boys singles – David Morrison, Perth High (Jay Ng, Perth High); girls doubles – Claire Dawson/Katherine Auld, Perth Academy (Rebecca Donaldson/Ruth Howie, Perth Academy); boys doubles – Jay Ng/David Morrison, Perth Academy (Sean Robertson/Craig Scim, Perth High); mixed doubles – Kirsty Irvine/Sean Robertson, Perth High (Megan Lancaster/Jamie Wylie, Breadalbane Academy).
U19s: Girls singles – Christine Sorbie, Kinross High (Jennifer McLean, Perth Grammar); boys singles – Patrick McHugh, Kinross High (Enoch Mak, Strathallan School); girls doubles – Penny Burns/Kirsty Butt, Perth High (Iona Dargie/Jennifer McLean, Perth Grammar); boys doubles – Patrick McHugh/Rory Cooper, Kinross High (Matthew Gallagher/Craig Smith, Perth High); mixed doubles – Christine Sorbie/Rory Cooper, Kinross High (Cat Blair/Nathan Hutchinson, Kinross High).
The event was organised by the Active Schools Co-ordinator at Blairgowrie High School, supported by PE teachers from Perth Academy and Breadalbane Academy and the Council's School Sports Development Officer.
NEARLY 100 players from all over Scotland will head to Perth next week for the Yonex Scottish National Badminton Championships.
The Fair City’s Bell’s Sports Centre will host one of the sport’s flagship events from February 5 to 7.
A bumper field consisting of 96 top players have signed-up this year, an increase from 87 in 2009 and 56 in ‘08.
The action gets underway on Friday afternoon at 3.30pm, with men’s singles qualifying and the main draw of the mixed doubles.
The other four events will be played, up to and including quarter-finals, on the Saturday.
The semi-finals will take place on Sunday morning, with the finals from 1pm.
Tickets are available on the door at Bell’s Sports Centre.
