A BUSY two days of racing at Perth Racecourse this week has whetted the appetite for the venue’s exciting Perth 800 race day on Saturday, August 21, combining National Hunt racing with a full programme of Perth 800 celebrations.
The evening meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday’s afternoon fixture recorded a Perthshire winner when Strobe, trained by Lucy Normile at Duncrievie near Glenfarg was the 11/2 winner of Tuesday’s novice steeplechase.
Lucinda Russell, who trains just a couple of miles from Lucy at Arlary near Milnathort saddled Ormello to take second place in the Bott Ltd Handicap Chase on Wednesday.
Looking to the Perth 800 race day next month, Perth Racecourse general manager Sam Morshead welcomed support from two major Perth-based names: “Stagecoach and Famous Grouse becoming our additional entertainment sponsors at the Perth 800 Race Day demonstrates the level of excitement in this forthcoming event,” commented Sam Morshead.
“It is great to have a local company support this high-profile local event.
“Not only will this special race fixture celebrate a momentous point in history for Perth, but coupled with the powerful programme we’ve just confirmed, we really are looking forward to a memorable race day.
“This special Perth Racecourse fixture will not only appeal to avid racegoers keen to watch racing involving ridden and trained by some of the UK’s top National Hunt jockeys and trainers, but will also appeal to a wide range of visitors looking for an enjoyable day out.”
The Perth 800 Race Day offers fun for all the family with themed historic activities centred on life in Perthshire as it was in 1210 including jousting and re-enactments.
In addition, visitors – young and old – are encouraged to get into the spirit and don their knightly armour or medieval princess attire to be in with the chance of winning a prize for the most suitably dressed 13th Century racegoer.
Sharing its parkland with Scone Palace, Perth Racecourse is located in an area steeped in history, offering the perfect setting for the re-enactment of King William I presenting the Royal Charter to Perth 800 years ago.
Jousting displays also taking place will feature stunts from mounted knights and their squires as they hone their skills with a series of exciting and breathtaking stunts.
Following the day’s racing and activities, ‘The Famous Perth 800 Concert’ will take place featuring live entertainment from a Jon Bon Jovi Tribute band.
Gates will open at noon with the first race at 3.05pm.
