Perthshire pair will take on the world

BIG County bowlers Ross Dennis and Chris McGready have set their sights on global domination after earning the chance to represent Scotland at next week’s World Indoor pairs championship.

The tournament, to be held at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk, will see 32 of the best players from around the world compete for one of the sport’s most coveted trophies.

Ross (37), who is president of Perth Indoor Bowling club – where team mate, and fellow Perth man, Chris is also a member – told the PA he expects his first taste of international action to be a successful one.

“This is only our fourth attempt at qualifying for a World Bowls Tour event and it has come good for us.

“Our final qualifying tie was in November against a team from Coatbridge. It was tough and was very close, but we got through it.

“I haven’t had any experience at this level before but, at the moment, I’m more excited than nervous.

“At the end of the day, I hope we go down and give a good account of ourselves.

“The most attractive thing about the competition is that it’s a chance to win a world title and compete at the highest level against the best players.

“We won’t know how it’s going to pan out until we get there, but I think we have a good chance,” he said.

It is the first time that any duo from the Big County have qualified for the annual showpiece.

Although Fair City man David Longmuir has previously represented Perthshire in the singles equivalent.

The pair’s campaign kicks off on Monday (January 5) against Simon Skelton and Jonathan Ross.
