Bowling umpires for Delhi Games

THREE bowls umpires from Perthshire will be on duty at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

This week, confirmation came through that Cathy Kinnear (Rattray), Eddie Nicholson (Bridge of Earn) and Bill Beedie (Blairgowrie) will join six other Scottish umpires, plus 23 from other countries who qualified last year as International Technical Officers.

The I.T.O. exam was set by the World Bowls organisation last year and 95 umpires qualified worldwide.

Of this group, there were 35 from Scotland, with Perthshire trio Sid Kinnear, Sheila Beedie and Charlie Speedie (West End) also successful.

The Delhi bowling matches of singles, pairs and triples are being played on a sets basis with sessions from 9.30am through to 10.30pm, with umpires on duty between one and three of the three-hour sessions every day.

Cathy was in Delhi in April, where a short competition was held to try out the facilities.

She said: “The temperature was in the 40's but the long days passed fairly quickly as you concentrated on the bowling and not the time.”

Based on past experience, Bill said: “It will be good to meet the bowlers from around the world, many of whom I have met at events which I have officiated at in the past.”

It will be Eddie’s second Commonwealth games, having been on duty at the Games in Edinburgh in 1986.

He said: “To be selected as an umpire for two Commonwealth Games is a great honour and a fitting climax to nearly 40 years of umpiring.”

The trio are leaving on September 27 and hope to enjoy some sight-seeing time before duty calls on October 3. They are being given a send-off by Perth and Kinross Council and Provost John Hulbert.

The Big County umpires are all very experienced and are hoping to be involved in the opening ceremony.
