Clean sweep in Consolation Cup

IT was a clean sweep of home wins in the Consolation Cup at the weekend as first Kenmore did what they had failed to do in their league meetings – and defeat Villareal.

Letham Lads battled hard but fell to goals from Abernethy and Bremner at the Vale. Newtyle and Vale of Atholl served up 10 goals, with the latter going through. Almondvale cruised past Bridgeton Utd and Burrelton sneaked past Kettins.

St John’s set up a League Cup final against Auchterarder on Thursday at Tulloch Park as Carle scored the only goal in extra- time. More pressingly, however, for St John’s is their important league tie this evening against close rivals Letham.

With Bridge of Earn completing their league campaign with maximum points at Balmoral Utd, they are six points ahead while Letham have three games left to play and need seven points from a possible nine or the league title will head to the Brig.

St John’s gaffer Simpson has assured Bridge of Earn his club’s focus will be their league tie against Letham. Kinrossie/Cale’s status in the Second Division was secured with another three points at already relegated Star of Atholl.

This was confirmed with the news that relegation rivals Letham United had decided to thrown in the towel for this season.

The sad news comes after Perth Royale announced on Friday that they too had gone into abeyance for this season.
