Eddie has three steps to heaven

PERTH coach Eddie Wolecki believes a trio of Fair City footballers are “three steps from immortality” as the Scottish women’s season nears a dramatic close.

The Bridgend-based man will lead his Glasgow City Ladies side out against Rangers at Stirling’s Forthbank Stadium on Sunday in the final of the Unite Scottish Women’s Cup.

Perth left-back Emma Fernon (22), along with striker Jane Brown (29) and newly-capped Scotland goalkeeper Laura Williamson (28), are all likely to figure for the side from the central belt.

With two games left of the domestic season their side sit top of the women’s Premier League and are closing-in on glory in both competitions.

Head coach Eddie told the PA that a league and cup double would live long in the memory.

He said: “The league season is going down to the wire but if we win our two remaining games then we will win the title.

“This could be a very good year. When you finish playing, regardless of how much money you’ve made or whatever, it’s the memories of winning trophies that you will look back on with most fondness.

“We’ve kept the build-up a bit low key, but this team is three games way from immortality.

“No Scottish women’s team has won the cup, league and played in European competition – which we did in November – in the same season,” he said.

Emma, who also lives in Bridgend, said a victory in Sunday’s showpiece – which is to be televised live on BBC Alba – would make up for the heartbreak of missing out at the same stage last year due to injury.

She said: “I’ve had injuries this year too but we’ve had such a great season I’ve hardly noticed.

“The only blip was after we came back from competing in the Champions League in Norway.

“We had to play two days after coming home and hit a bit of a sticky patch because the trip took it out of us.

“I’ve been with Glasgow City for five seasons now. We won the cup when I first arrived, but to win it again after missing out last year would be great,” she said.
