Perthshire Juniors match reports

KINNOULL and Jeanfield Swifts had very satisfying results on Saturday.

Kinnoull’s win over Montrose Roselea saw them move top of the Premier League table while Swifts accounted for Rosyth who were second top of the Central League table – just two points behind league leaders Oakley.

The first chance in the Kinnoull v. Roselea game fell to the home club. After 10 minutes, a loose pass was intercepted by Chris Anton who drove forward and the released Jon Kelly was on target but Roselea keeper Ross McLeod dived to push the ball out for a corner which brought no joy.

Kinnoull won a free kick on the edge of the penalty box which Chris Anton touched to Steve McManus his shot had the keeper at full strength he managed to palm the ball away.

Roselea now came much more into the game and forced Kinnoull back on the defensive and their striker Kevin Longmuir came close twice with chances but both were wide of the mark.

Kinnoull were very much on the back foot and it was only a superb save from their keeper Matt Curtis from yet another Longmuir shot that saved them from going behind in 26 minutes and four minutes later Roselea, who had continued on the attack, were awarded a penalty after a mistimed tackle in the box by Steve McManus. Matt Millar cracked the ball into the back off the net to put Roselea 1-0 ahead at the interval

Kinnoull boss Scott Brown made two changes to his line-up at the interval when he brought on subs Jamie McKenzie and Mark Gordon and they made an immediate impact when after only five minutes a cross from Mark Gordon was met by Jamie McKenzie on the edge of the six yard box he took one touch and with a super finish fired a shot into the top corner of the net and the game was all square.

Kinnoull were now beginning to get the upper hand, although they survived a strong penalty claim for hand ball from Roselea.

In 62 minutes a cross from Jon Kelly was met by Gary Sweeney but his header went straight into goalkeeper Ross McCleod’s hands but five minutes later he could do nothing about another header this time from Jon Kelly who rose to nod a corner delivered by Chris Anton to the near post into the corner of the net.

Kinnoull now had the bit between their teeth and a minute later Chris Anton picked up the ball on the halfway line and went straight at the Roselea defence Chris evaded a couple of challenges and finished of an excellent run with a fine shot into the corner of the net from just inside the penalty box.

In 75 minutes Roselea had a great chance to reduce the leeway when Colin Kennedy met with a cross and his diving header went inches past the post.

In the final minute of the game Roselea keeper Ross McLeod fouled Robbie Holden in the penalty box Chris Anton took the resulting spot kick to fire it high in to the back of the net to make it 4–1 for Kinnoull and that’s how the game ended.

Jeanfield Swifts sailed into the attack against Rosyth from the kick-off and after nine minutes they took the lead with a spectacular 20-yard strike from Tony Holt.

Swifts were awarded a free kick which Tony bent round the defensive wall and into the net.

Swifts continued to pressurise the Rosyth defence and in 17 minutes they went 2–0 ahead. Mike Gow initiated the move when he played the ball to Jamie Reilly out on the right. Jamie left a few defenders in his wake as he cut in and crossed a great ball into the heart of the goalmouth, it was met by Tony Holt who headed it down to David Thornton who promptly dispatched it into the back of the net from close range.

Rosyth strived hard to get back into the game and in twenty three minutes they came close to reducing the leeway when a threw ball was picked up by their striker Mark Pagliaruo who had a goal from just inside the penalty box the ball came back of the post and was cleared.

Swifts returned to the attack and in 35 minutes their striker John Anderson came near to increasing their lead when he cottoned on to a clearance from a Rosyth keeper and from all of 25 yards he hit a superb strike and it looked to be bound for the top corner of the net but it clipped the bar and went over.

Five minutes later a good piece of play between Dean Ogg and Adam McDoughan saw Ogg hit a in swinging cross into the Swifts penalty box but it was headed over by a defender for a corner which brought Rosyth no joy.

Swifts returned to the attack from the restart and in the 50 second minute a great through ball left Tony Holt with a clear run on goal and on a one to one situation with the keeper and Tony slotted the ball past him to make it 3–0. Three minutes later in another Swifts attack David Thornton dispossessed a Rosyth defender and cut in from the right and unselfishly laid the ball off to Tony Holt who was unmarked and on the edge of the six yard box and he had the easy task of knocking the ball over the goal line to complete his hat-trick and put Swifts 4–0 ahead.

Rosyth got a consolation goal in 68 minutes when a cross from their right was hit past Swifts keeper Mark Mitchell to make it 4–1.

Bankfoot away to Kirkcaldy YM took the lead after 14 minutes when Gavin Mackie hit an angular cross in from the right which was picked up by Mike Jarmuszewski in the penalty box. The keeper came out of his goal, Mike rounded him and cracked the ball into the back of the net.

Five minutes later the YM took the lead when a Jamie Gilfillan cross from the right was unfortunately headed into the back of his own net by Jamie McAinsh. Unfortunately McAinsh and a YM player were involved in a confrontation and the Bankies player was red carded for his part in it while the YM player fortunate to get away with a yellow card.

Coupar Angus were at home to North League hotshots Violet and they found themselves trailing 2–0 at the interval.

The second half was a different story though as Coupar chased the game and had the Violet defence under quite a bit of pressure and they had chances but failed to put them away till they finally made it 2–1 with just a couple of minutes of the game remaining with a cross from Steven Leahy was headed in by Ewan Ogilvie but unfortunately for Coupar it was too little too late.
