BRIDGEND-based coach Eddie Wolecki was celebrating recently after his Glasgow City Ladies side secured a third league title in three years.
Speaking after a 4-1 victory over Hibs in Edinburgh, the City head coach said he was “delighted” by the consistency showcased by his players – a clutch of whom come from Perthshire.
He said: “We’ve played a title-deciding match against Hibs in each of the last three years and, thankfully, we’ve managed to win all of them.
“I’m delighted. The league campaign has been shortened because we’re switching to a summer programme next season, but to win each of the ten games we’ve played so far is fantastic.
“It’s fantastic to be back in the Champion’s League again too – the best players in the world play in that competition and it’s a great test for us.
“All the girls are extremely motivated to make sure they do the right things.
“The whole squad has been excellent and we’ll be working hard over the winter to make sure we’re at the same level again next time around,” he said.
Full-back Emma Fernon, who also lives in Bridgend, scored the second goal in the title decider and admitted nerves were jangling prior to her fourth strike of the season.
Unusually, half of the 22-year-old’s goals this term have come direct from corner-kicks – a skill she says she practices regularly.
She added: “Until we went 2-1 up it was a case of us having all the possession, but our final ball was letting us down.
“To be honest, I think it was nerves because everybody knew the title was on the line and that we were getting close it winning it three times in a row.
“We’re getting better and better all the time.
“Being involved in the Champions League again is a great opportunity and, to be honest, I can’t wait for the new season to start!” she said.
