Scone Thistle to hold tribute to former club president

WEATHER permitting on Sunday, Scone Thistle players, past and present, will face up to each other at the RDM ground in a game that is being staged as a tribute to Scott Farquarson the Thistle's legendary past president, secretary, and treasurer.

Scott whose untimely death a few weeks ago robbed junior football of one of its most charismatic personalities and also a very astute legislator who was a leading light in bringing the Thistle back to the junior fold 20-odd years ago.

Scott was a father figure in the club and was a friend and mentor to the players over the years and Sunday’s game is a mark of respect from the players past and present for the man they held in such high esteem and was well named Mr Scone Thistle.

Ian Flaherty who was with the Thistle for quite a few seasons has been entrusted with the task of organising the Golden Oldies, as he calls them, for this game and was delighted to accept.

Flax said: “Farquie, as he was known to everybody in the club, went out of his way to make any new signings feel at home and ensured they were very much part of Scone Thistle.”

Flax has assembled quite a squad of well-known names from the past who will all play at some stage of Sunday’s game. Here is a random selection of some of those who are in the squad: Jimmy Fotheringham, Ian Cameron, who is coming from Glasgow to take part, Johnny Brown who is delighted that the game coincides with him being home from America on holiday, Andy Gordon, Jimmy Fenton, Gerry Donally and Graham McGregor.

Thistle manager Derek Adam will be in the golden oldies squad and his assistant Alan McKillop will take charge of the team which is expected to be pretty much at full strength.

The kick of is at noon.

The players will be entertained by the club at the Scone Arms after the game.

There are obviously some doubts about the game due to the weather and anyone wishing to make enquiries as to whether it will go ahead should contact club chairman Graham Campbell at 07745412200 or manager Derek Adam at 07736037243.
