THE hard frosty weather returned with a vengeance as it caused most of Saturdays programme in this area to be called off.
The only pitch to get the go ahead was Coronation Park where Bankfoot played hosts to Lewis United in the GA Cup.
Luncarty’s game with Dundonald which was due at Brownlands Park was switched to the Fife clubs ground as the weather had been much milder there. The only other game that went ahead was again in Fife and that was the Crossgate v Scone Thistle those were both Central league games.
The first chance of the Bankfoot Lewis United clash came after 10 minutes when Daniel Forde the Lewis striker was left with a chance but he shot over the bar from the corner of the six yard box.
Bankies retaliated and a good move saw David Fyfe hit the ball past the Lewis post from just inside the penalty box.
In 23 minutes Daniel Forde was left with another chance to put his side ahead when from 10 yards and only the keeper to beat he let go only to see his shot rebound off the crossbar to his team mate Jindrich Biskup who was a few yards from the goal and he too saw his shot come rattling back off the bar to be cleared this time by a Bankies defender, which was a let off for Bankies.
A few minutes later a good move from Bankies saw them with a chance. Donald McDonald was on the edge of the Lewis penalty box and he let go a thundering drive but it went past the post. Bankies continued to attack the Lewis goal and Gavin Mackie blasted the ball over the bar from just inside the penalty box.
Another chance came Bankies way when they were awarded a free kick 20 yards from their opponents goal but this was blocked and cleared. The score sheet remained blank at the interval.
Ten minutes into the second half Lewis were awarded a free kick which was taken by Tony Henry. His shot from 25 yards was right on target but was cleared by the Bankies defence.
It was the Bankies turn to get a free kick a few minutes later and it found Danny Dobbie well positioned but his header was easily saved by the keeper.
Play continued to swing from end to end and in 78 minutes a shot from Gavin Mackie was right on target but was saved by the Lewis keeper who dived full length to push the ball out for a corner which brought the Bankies no joy.
Bankies were now doing most of the attacking and Danny Dobbie hit a scorching drive from close on 30 yards over the bar. Then a great pass from David Fyfe left Barry Ward who had come on as a sub with a chance but he shot tamely into the keepers hands from 10 yards.
Lewis almost scored in 84 minutes when they broke through and looked certain to score until keeper Kenny Band produced a brilliant save. Ten minutes later when the referee blew for time up the game was still goalless.
The tie would now be decided by a penalty shoot out and while the 90 minutes hadn’t produced a goal there were plenty in the shoot out which saw 20 penalties taken and ended up with an 8–7 score line which unfortunately was in Lewis United’s favour and it brought to an end Bankies GA Cup hopes but they had certainly made their super league opponents fight every inch of the way.
Scone Thistle in their away game against Crossgates matched their hosts in the first half which ended all square at 1–1. The Fifers took the lead with a 25 yard strike from Stuart McFarlane but Scone fought back and it didn’t take them long to get back on level terms. They were awarded a penalty after Paul Anderson was fouled in the box, Drew Fleming took the resulting spot kick and he fired the ball past the keeper.
The second half saw Scone a bit more on the defensive but they were dangerous in their breakaways and come close once or twice to scoring. However when a goal did come it was at the other end when Steven McKintosh headed home a cross to score what proved to be the winner for Crossgates.
Luncarty away to promotion chasing Dundonald were holding their own until the 38th minute then Martyn Thompson hit a quick fire double for the Fifers and a few minutes before the interval Derek Wallace made it 3–0.
Luncarty soon found themselves two further goals behind early in the second half. Wayne Right and Ross McIlven were the scorers. Ten minutes later there was more woe for the Bleachers when Craig Wallace was sent off after picking up a second caution.
A 25 yard strike from Robert Hodge saw the Fifers increase their lead to 6–0. With 20 minutes to go Ray Morgan came on as a sub for them and the striker went on to score twice to take the final scoreline to 8–0 in the Fifers favour.
Kinnoull and Jeanfield Swifts both had their games cancelled and they arranged a friendly which was played on the McDiarmid Park all weather pitch.
Kinnoull went on to win this game by 7–2. Their goal scorers were Neil Gardiner (2), Mark Duigan (2), Steve McMannis, Jon Kelly and Robbie Holden. Swifts scorers were Chris Dodd and Sean Fergus.
Coupar Angus boss Barry Britton has made six new signings three of whom have been recruited from East Stirling on delayed transfers, they are goalkeeper Ian Muir, defender Garry Ohara and striker Jordan Kelly and were all involved in the East Stirling youth sides. Barry has also secured the transfer of midfield player Craig Johnstone from Forfar West End and experienced striker Angus Gallagher who had a spell in senior football and played with Elmwood and Downfield. Barry is expecting to have another player signed up this week.
Scone Thistle are to hold a quiz night on Monday, February 22, in the Scone Arms. All teams are welcome and should report by 7.15pm.
