Perthshire pair’s cup runneth on

IT WAS a good day for Perthshire Clubs in the Scottish Cup with two from three advancing to the next round.

St Johns and Dundee City again could not be separated after 90 minutes, however the superior fitness of the boys in maroon was the difference with Quinn at the double, pulling the strings to help them advance.

Joining them were Fairfield, edging Cannon Fodder by the odd goal in 11 in a high-scoring affair.

The only disappointment was the Vale’s exit to St James. After doing the hard work on their travels last week they could not make the most of their second bite of the cherry.

In the Ashleigh Cup, the biggest shock of the day was Rattray’s resounding win over Roselea – or was it?

Roselea have been in decline in recent years and have struggled since the season began, while in contrast, Rattray are one of the front runners for promotion to the top division this season.

Comfortable wins for Burrelton, Auchterarder and Letham saw them advance to the next round, where they will be joined by Glenfarg, Jeanfield and Bridgeton Utd who edged close affairs. But the result of the day goes to Strathearn Grove who, despite a two division gap, dispatched Alyth on home ground after extra-time.

With some shifty dubiety about the Craigie debutant Majed Dasouki, it was Barwani who had a nightmare performance for Craigie, gifting Balmoral a comfortable success in a must-win league game for the Perth club.

The Balmoral title train rolled all over him and Craigie to extend the Blairgowrie club’s lead at the top of the table.

Coupar Angus edged in front at the top of the second after inflicting a first league defeat over Comrie on home soil, in a tricky tie well marshalled by the referee in charge.

Close neighbours Vale had no such trouble dispatching bottom club Newtyle, hitting six without reply. The lone game in Division Three saw the Brig go level with Glenfarg at the top, with both clubs sporting a 100 per cent record.
