Junior football update

FIVE Perthshire teams were involved in Saturday’s Scottish Cup second round ties.

Unfortunately, only Kinnoull and Blairgowrie will go forward to the third round draw as Bankfoot, Jeanfield Swifts and Coupar Angus all fell by the wayside.

Kinnoull were hosts to Ayrshire side Irvine Vics and it was the Vics who had the first chance of the game in the eigth minute when a ball from their midfield found Kevin Adam in the penalty box and unmarked and with only keeper McKinnie to beat he blasted the ball over the bar from about 10 yards.

Kinnoull retaliated to this near setback a couple of minutes later and were awarded a free kick which was taken by Daryn Smith, but was blocked and cleared up the park.

The ball was picked up by Vics’ Ben Carson who was fouled about 22 yards from the Kinnoull goal.

He took the resultant free kick himself and fired it low into the bottom right hand corner of Stephen McKinney’s goal in the 13th minute. A couple of minutes later the game was halted after a clash of heads which involved Kinnoull’s Keith Dewar and Vics’ Ian Seymour. The game, which had been held up for a few minutes, was restarted with a bounce ball.

Ian Seymour, who had obviously recovered from the head clash incident, while Keith Dewar was still receiving treatment, put his side 2–0 ahead in the 17th minute when he beat Steve McKinney from the edge of the penalty box. Keith Dewar was obviously still feeling the effects of his head knock and was taken off as a precaution and was replaced by Richard Doig.

The interval was only four minutes away when Kinnoull cut the deficit and this too was a goal from a free kick which was taken by Daryn Smith who scored with a very well executed effort that left keeper McIlroy helpless as it curled its way into the right hand top corner of his net.

Kinnoull surged into the attack from the restart and after only 90 seconds they were back on level terms with an excellent goal from their striker Gary Fraser who met with a cross from the left in the Vics penalty box, turned his marker and then lobbed the keeper for what was a really well taken goal.

Kinnoull had the Vics pretty much on the back foot now and on the hour mark they were awarded a penalty when Lee Deans was brought down by a rather hefty tackle. Centre half Blair Gilmore was the culprit and he received a red card. Daryn Smith beat the keeper with the spot kick for his second goal of the game which put his side 3–2 ahead.

Ten minutes later Kinnoull more or less clinched their place in the next round with goal number four.

They had won a corner on the left which was taken by Daryn Smith which he swung into the goalmouth and Lee Deans outjumped a bevy of defenders to bullet a header into the back of the net.

John Holts’ young Blairgowrie side, for a second time this season, produced a shock cup result. A few weeks ago, much against the odds, they ousted the Lothians side Tranent from the East of Scotland Cup and on Saturday they bucked the odds big time once again when they beat Montrose Roselea, who were being punted as the odds on favourites to win this tie.

Roselea looked as if they were going to live up to the pre match hype as they got off to a great start when they were awarded a penalty after seven minutes and James Collier made no mistake with the spot kick.

Blair were back on level terms with a little more than 10 minutes on the clock when David Salisbury hit a cross into their goalmouth and a defender, in trying to clear, had the misfortune to score an own goal.

Roselea regained their lead in 27 minutes.

Their striker James Collier was put through and was left in a one to one situation with keeper Gordon O’Brien who managed to parry his shot but the ball broke away from him to Joe Aitken who was following up and he made it 2–1 and that’s how the score stood at the interval.

Blair levelled the score in 62 minutes when Gary Axworthy ran on to a through ball and as he made for goal the keeper came off his line and Gary, from just inside the penalty box, slotted the ball past him into the back of the net. Blair then went on to take the lead in 74 minutes when David Salisbury played a great pass through Greg Ryder at the back post and he promptly dispatched it into the back of the net for what proved to be the winner. Roselea threw everything except the proverbial kitchen sink at them in the remaining minutes but were thwarted by a very resolute Blair defence.

Bankfoot and Jeanfield Swifts had their cup hopes ended in their away games against St Roch’s and Blantyre Vics.

Bankfoot made their exit when they lost to St Roch’s by 4–0. Despite this convincing scoreline the Bankies could have had their place in the next round virtually secured had they taken the chances that came their way in the first half which they dominated but they failed to do the necessary when it came to putting the ball in the back of the net. The scoreline was goalless when the interval came.

The second half was a different story as fortunes were turned round and it was now the hosts who were pretty much in charge and the difference between the teams was highlighted by the fact that they took the chances that came their way and finished convincing winners.

Their goal scorers were Ross McIntosh in 65 minutes, Ross Mackie 75 and 85 minutes and Mike Williams 90 minutes.

Jeanfield went a goal behind in 28 minutes when the Blantyre striker Colin Boylan scored from 15 yards.

It didn’t take Swifts long to get back on level terms when a cross from Jamie Reid was met by Gavin Anderson and he cracked it past the keeper from just inside the penalty box to make it 1–1 in 37 minutes and that’s how the score stood at the break.

Swifts were the better side in the second half and both Jamie Reid and Steve McManus came close to putting them ahead but were denied by excellent saves from the keeper.

Robbie Holden did score what looked a perfectly good goal in the 75th minute but the referee adjudged him to be offside.

The game looked to be heading for a replay as it moved into its final minute when a long clearance from the Vics half sailed over the heads of the Swifts defence and landed with Colin Boylan and for the second time in the game he beat keeper Mark Mitchell from inside the penalty box.

Swifts came near to salvaging the tie in stoppage time when a free kick from Gavin Mackie was met by Tony Holt in the Vics goalmouth and his header looked to be a homer but it was brilliantly saved by the keeper and Swifts were out of the cup.

Coupar Angus were away to Kirkcaldy YM who are the Central League leaders and they went in at the interval trailing 2–0.

The YMs power however told in the second half and Coupar’s young team finally went down by 7–0. To their credit, despite the scoreline, they kept trying right up to the final whistle.

Luncarty were at home to Lochgelly Albert in the league.

The Albert, who reckon they will be strong contenders in the race for the championship, were shocked to find themselves a goal behind after 20 minutes, Scott McKain was the scorer.

Ten minutes later they suffered a further blow when they had Willie Telfer sent off. Despite being down to 10 men Sam Courts got them back on level terms a few minutes before the interval and they went on to take the lead with a goal from John McDiarmid and an own goal, in 53 and 65 minutes.

Scott McKain did the business again when he brought the Bleachers back into the game when he scored his second goal of the game six minutes from time and the Bleachers threw everything into those remaining minutes for the equaliser but to no avail.

Luncarty Junior FC are ask anyone who has not yet replied to their invitation to the function which is being held on November 19, to mark their 125 years in football to do so by a deadline of Saturday.
