Main worry

VETERAN Saints’ keeper Alan Main is facing a battle to be fit for the start of the season following shoulder surgery.

The 40-year-old stopper suffered with the problem at the tail end of last season and was being treated with painkilling injections. However, manager Derek McInnes told PA Sport that there was no guarantee it would work, meaning surgery was the only viable option.

Main will still travel with the squad of around 26 who leave for Wolverhampton next week for a week-long training programme at West Bromwich Albion’s facilities. However, he will play no part in pre-season matches and may be out until August.

McInnes said: “It’s disappointing for us but it’s more disappointing for Alan because he’s worked really hard. He’s a great pro and a good influence on the team.”

Main’s injury has opened the door for kid-gloves Euan McLean to stake a claim for the number one jersey. The 22-year-old signed on at McDiarmid Park from Dundee United in May and is held in high regard by his manager.

“We’re disappointed about losing Alan but we have Euan McLean who has joined us from Dundee United. He’s a good keeper and I have a lot of faith in him. He’ll do a good job for us,” McInness said.

The Saints squad that travels south will feature the team regulars as well as new signings and some youngsters who will use facilities both at The Hawthorns and The University of Wolverhampton. McInness spent three years at West Brom and could think of no better place to begin preparations for the Livingston game on Saturday, August 2.

“I know the area very well and I’m looking forward to it immensely,” McInness said.

The Saints manager added: “We won’t be playing any games, it’s solely training. I want to concentrate on getting the work done. I want the boys to enjoy it but we’re not there to have a laugh. There’s serious work to be done.”

McInnes is hopeful that the week in the West Midlands will help the new boys settle in and get everyone at the club focussed on the forthcoming season – and a promotion bid.

He said: “As soon as the fixtures come out, you start to plan the games in your head. We want to do the utmost to make this a memorable season.

“We are eagerly anticipating the season ahead but we know it’s going to be hard work.”

Saints still hope to add a new left-back to their ranks before the new season kicks-off.

Meanwhile, however, his first priority is the week-long training stint down south – and Main’s fitness battle.
