Saint Paul ready for rapid start

DEREK McInnes has secured long-time target Paul Hanlon on a short-term loan from Hibs.

And the six-foot-plus left-back goes straight into the Perth squad to face Clyde tomorrow.

Initially, Hanlon, who turns 19 in January, has signed for a month but he hinted that his stay could be longer.

The Scotland U19 international is one of the country’s most highly rated youngsters, reflected in the five year contract he signed at Easter Road.

But after breaking into the first-team early in the SPL campaign, the teenager has been playing second fiddle to experienced defender Ian Murray.

After signing, Hanlon said: “I’m delighted to be here. I got a taste of first team football and now I want more.

“I started the first three games of the season.

“I’ve been playing regularly in the reserves and was in Hungary with the Scotland U19s.

“Hopefully I can get games here and if everything goes well and the clubs agree, maybe the loan could be extended.”

Hanlon comes highly recommended and his arrival will free-up Liam Craig to push forward into midfield.

McInnes, who has seen several previous moves for a left-back thwarted, said: “Mixu Paatelainen thinks highly of Paul but this could benefit the player and us.

“The loan is for one month initially and possibly it will be extended.

“I have watched him closely, this season and last.

“We tried to get him here in August. I’m sure Paul will do well here.”

There will be several changes in the Perth line-up for the Clyde clash, some enforced, others tactical.

Regular Stuart McCaffrey is suspended and Steven Anderson will slot into central defence.

But Martin Hardie (back), Collin Samuel (thigh) and Peter MacDonald (calf) have missed training sessions this week and fall into the doubtful category. Kevin Moon, Andy Jackson and Gavin Swankie are all staking claims.

McInnes said: “Andy is buzzing again and he’s knocking on the door.

“After a stop-start season it’s great to see him back.

“That’s what having a squad is all about.”
