Tee off for Ryder ‘face-lift’

PLANS to re-invent the 18th hole at the PGA Centenary Course in time for the 2014 Ryder Cup will be unveiled in the next three months.

Acclaimed Auchterarder born course designer David McLay Kidd has been charged with tweaking the Jack Nicklaus designed track at Gleneagles.

And he’s working closely with Perth-based Scott Fenwick, golf courses and estate manager at Gleneagles.

The 18th was pinpointed for change several years ago and a number of under-wraps drafts have been produced.

Scott said: “Several changes have already taken place and we are currently looking at the 18th. It should be finalised in the next two or three months.

“While many Ryder Cup matches don’t go to the last hole we have to assume they will. We have to produce a challenging hole and that will be ideal for the Ryder Cup, the Johnnie Walkers championships and every-day golfers enjoying a game over the PGA Centenary Course.”

The August Johnnie Walker Championship could see a 618-yard challenge for the pros at the extended ninth. The European Tour will decide if the extra 54 yards will be unveiled for all or part of the tournament.

Championship director Graeme Marchbank said this year’s event will break new ground as the first Ryder Cup venue to see a European team unveiled.

Captain Nick Faldo will trumpet his 12-strong line-up for Valhalla three weeks down the line.

Graeme said: “We know that for some of the players qualification will be a special focus and for the Scottish golfing public it will be an exciting climax to what is proving a fascinating race to be in the team. It is also the last chance for those hoping for a captain’s pick to impress Nick.”

Prices for the August event will be £19 a day, £38 for an adult season ticket, with concessions also available. Parking will be free.
