Perth and Kinross County

THE Coronation Trophy final was played over The King's Course, Gleneagles on Saturday, August 16.

The two finalists were Alyth and Auchterarder. Both clubs fielded strong sides and were quite well supported by their members.

In the opening match Graham Lowson and David Smith overcame early first hole waywardness to settle down and play very impressively indeed against Kevin McAlpine and Mark Cameron. David had only just returned from holiday that afternoon and treated his partner to a second shot out of deep hay to the right of the first. After the opening hole the pair settled down to sub-par golf which proved too good for the Alyth pair who found it hard to get out of 'eighth gear.' Mr Lowson was very complementary of his partner's golf whilst being none-too-shy about his own performance. The winning margin was 3 and 2.

The second match went the way of the Alyth club with Billy Grace and Paul Williamson beating the strong partnership of Stuart Burns and Philip Scott on the last green.

The third match was a scrappy affair which saw experienced and calm Robert Aitken partnered by the nervous and excitable Scott Haxton defeating an out-of-sorts Steve Cochrane and Gordon Kidd. The match was not of the low-scoring quality of match one but it was still exciting to watch as a neutral. The Auchterarder duo were victors by 3 and 2, giving Auchterarder the trophy by two matches to one.

The County Strokeplay Championship was played at Muckhart Golf Club on Sunday, August 17. Thirty-two players enjoyed a course in excellent condition and a welcoming clubhouse, perfect for such an event.

The event was won by Stuart Graham of Blairgowrie with a two round total of 141. Second was Nicky Barr on 142, with Steven Hume coming third on 144. Team captain, Tom McLevy, will be pleased that members of his six man team remain in good form.

The Youth's Championship was won by Sam McLaren with Calum Graham coming second and Danny Young third. Milnathort youngsters were much to the fore. It is good to see so many good young players making their way in senior county events.
