The Scots got off to a flying start on day one of the 72-hole event, finishing just two strokes behind leaders USA. Macaulay was the top scoring Scot with a majestic five under 67, with Dear (Murrayshall) three under and Booth (Comrie) two under.

The event teed-up yesterday and reaches a climax on Sunday.

The Scots finished sixth two years ago in Stellenbosch.

Macaulay, the Allied Surveyors Scottish Amateur Champion and number one Scottish amateur in 2007, is joined by his GB and I team mate Booth, who enjoyed a 100 per cent unbeaten record in the St Andrews Trophy as they played a key role in their team’s victory over the Continent of Europe side. Booth clinched the Bidwells Scottish Stroke Play Championship, his first national men’s title.
