Monty’s wind breaker

COLIN Montgomerie could have been forgiven for staying at home and sending his apologies as Dunning took a battering from the weekend storm.

A cup of tea and Soccer AM must have seemed a better bet.

But Monty was determined the gruesome weather wouldn’t wash-out an eagerly awaited charity day teed-up to raise cash for a community pavilion in his adopted home village.

Gale force winds and biting rain ruled out the planned exhibition match but the eight-times European Order of Merit winner was determined not to let down villagers and spectators.

He held an impromptu golf clinic and treated a delighted audience to an indoors question and answer session.

Despite being schooled at nearby Strathallan, Monty hasn’t played the course.

The elements defeated him on Saturday while Tour colleagues were trailing home behind shirt-sleeved Sergio Garcia in the Castellon Masters in Spain.

But Monty pledged to give it another go in December.
