“A SUCCESSFUL year in tough times.”
That was the message delivered to King James VI members attending last night's AGM in the Salutation Hotel.
The historic island course was again in superb condition despite one of the wettest summers on record, playing host to an increasing number of member rounds but fewer visitors.
Reporting a manageable deficit, club captain Ray Smethurst said: “We completed a very enjoyable 2008 celebrating our 150th anniversary within our means and indeed increased our profit from fundraising in the process.”
As if to prove this point, the club's impressive social programme delivered over £5000 into the coffers from last week's well-received annual Sportsmen's Dinner.
“We managed our costs well, reducing overheads when compared to 2007 despite necessary health and safety upgrades and some clubhouse improvements,” Ray continued. “So despite our lower income due to a fall in visitor numbers, we are pleased with our 2008 performance.”
Reflecting on the challenges ahead Ray observed that, despite the arrival of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in 2014, golf in Scotland still requires a shot in the arm.
“We have researched many like-type clubs across Scotland and found that Scottish golf in general is suffering a downturn,” he said.
“Our strategy is to continue to encourage new Perth golfers, through our coaching systems and more family and social golf by developing a more flexible approach to pricing and visitor and guest tee availability.”
Also on the 2009 agenda for the King James VI Club is a closer working relationship with Perth and Kinross Council.
