Teenage golfer will tee off at championship in Utrecht
CRAIGIE Hill teenager Danny Young has his sights set on a US golfing scholarship but first he’s relishing the prospect of stepping into the international arena.
The 17-year-old, who recently completed his sixth year at Perth Academy, was delighted to be listed in the six-strong Scotland team to play in the European Amateur Boys Team Championship in Utrecht.
The action gets under way on Tuesday, with team captain Barrie Douglas bowing out after his fourth championship.
Barrie said: “Danny fully deserves his place. He has been well placed in all the events this season.”
The Scots U18s last won the title nine years ago.
Danny has already played the course, having been listed in a provisional squad which played several games during a May recce.
He said: “I’m not the sort to get nervous so I’m really looking forward to this. It’s my first proper Scotland cap and I can’t wait to get going.”
Danny, who is helping out in the Craigie Hill pro shop over the summer, is currently fourth in the national Order of Merit.
“I’m helping out Nial McGill in the shop and getting in as much practice as possible,” he said.
Now playing off plus one, Danny was introduced to the game by dad Ian at Auchterarder but the Hill has been home for several years. Danny is also a member at Blairgowrie.
“I’m hoping to go to Lynn University in the States in August. That’s where Gavin Dear went and he can’t speak highly enough of his experience there.”
