AS part of a varied 2009 Centenary programme, Pitlochry Golf Club is celebrating its rich heritage with a special final event on Sunday.
The stunning course in Highland Perthshire was designed by Open champion Willie Fernie.
And Pitlochry invited clubs whose courses were also designed by the famous Scot to compete for the inaugural Willie Fernie Quaich.
Captain David Downie said Sunday’s event would turn back the clock and pay homage to the course architect.
David said: “Golf club centenary celebrations inevitably involve looking back to the genesis of the course, and in the case of Pitlochry this research focussed on the original architect - Willie Fernie of Troon.
“Although his status as an Open winner (1883, Musselburgh) and designer of championship courses (including Turnberry) is acknowledged by historians, the extent of his influence is less well known to most.
“Fernie was, in fact, involved in a significant number of designs and alterations – 48 at the last count.
“He held the position of professional at only two clubs (Felixtowe from 1884 and Troon from 1887 until he retired in 1924), both of which he transformed.”
During his time at Troon, Fernie became a sought-after course designer, involved in numerous projects throughout the British Isles, and some on the continent.
In order to celebrate Fernie's contribution to golf, and Pitlochry in particular, the club is hosting the inaugural Willie Fernie Quaich on Sunday.
The competition is open to all (£10 per pair), and will be in the traditional format of a Scotch Foursomes – where shot alternation is continuous between holes.
As well as the open prizes (including a first prize of £100 and medals), there will also be a specially commissioned “Fernie Quaich” for the best score by a team from a club with a Fernie connection.
David said: “We are delighted that we will be joined on the day by descendants of Willie Fernie, taking part in the competition, and participating in the formalities.”
