Record turn-out for Island Open

HAILED by Provost John Hulbert as “a jewel in Perth's crown,” King James VI Golf Club again justified his description as it hosted an incredible 213 competitors in its annual Open event on Sunday.

Thought to be one of the largest Open turn-outs in Perth's golfing history, players from all over Scotland, representing 65 different golf clubs, enjoyed the unique “King Jimmy” course.

Outright winner of the 0-12 section, by virtue of a BIH was home player and five handicapper Donald Henderson with an impressive net 66, while the 13-24 section was won by J. Randalls from Crieff with a net 63.

The best gross score of the day was a one under par 69 from Tulliallan's P. Dempsey.

King James's managing secretary, Mike Brown, said: “We had a record entry in 2009 but this year really exceeded our expectations.

“We could have filled at least another 20 places. The Open was a great success and feedback from our visitors supports this.

“I received comments regarding the superb condition of the course and the excellent greens, the introduction of every player on the first tee, and the warm welcome received within the clubhouse. Already we are being asked for next year's date!”

Captain John Pettigrew said: “It was great to see so many old friends, who come back year after year, enjoying their golf on the Island.

“A special mention must go to our greenkeeping team, who provided a magnificent course for the day.”

John added: “We are the oldest club in Perthshire, and celebrated our 150th anniversary two years ago. We are delighted and privileged to be the custodians of such a great asset, which brings so many golfers to Perth, adding value to the local economy.”
