CARNOUSTIE Open winner Paul Lawrie brought the famous Claret Jug along to Blairgowrie Golf Club.
The Aberdeen star, who recently returned to winning way by claiming the Andalucian Open title, teamed-up with club professional and respected Ryder Cup official Charles Dernie for an exhibition match over the renowned Rosemount course. And they attracted a 200-strong gallery.
The pair know each other well from their days together at Banchory Golf Club.
And they delighted members and visitors by playing a match with top club players George Brass and Stuart Graham.
Paul also took time out to encourage junior members who had come along to get a birdie’s eye view of their hero.
He showed the quality which has taken him to the top. Paul was six under par on his own with an outstanding display of golf, leaving playing partner Charles struggling to contribute. Their opponents, at five under, lost the match one down.
Admiring Stuart and George said the experience of playing with an Open champion is the pinnacle of their golfing careers.
Spectators were also impressed the overall manner and ball striking ability of the successful Tour professional.
Yesterday, Charles said: “Paul is the best ball striker I have played with. He has always had terrific belief in himself but has retained an unassuming and pleasant attitude to golf and golfers.”
The Open winner spent time signing autographs and having his photograph taken with the Claret Jug. He was also happy to chat with fans on his way round the course.
Paul told PA Sport: “It’s been many years since I played at Blairgowrie and it was great fun playing again with Charles against Stuart and George who, at times, hit their ball like tour pros.
“Rosemount was in fine condition and it was great to see so many members out walking the fairways and watching our match. It’s never easy playing in front of a crowd and Charles, Stuart and George should all be proud of the way they played.”
Managing secretary Douglas Cleeton said: “It was a great honour to have an Open champion play at Blairgowrie. Paul Lawrie not only showed the many spectators how golf should be played but his manner and humour on the way around the golf course, whilst easing himself to six under par, showed where many mere mortal golfers are getting it wrong!
“The Paul Lawrie Foundation is terrific and dedicated to golf for youngsters. It was evident from Paul’s enthusiasm that this means a great deal to him.
“Blairgowrie Golf Club have been fortunate to have Paul play here and we will continue to support his foundation through our own fixtures and external fixtures, including events such as this.”
