THE plush, new-look Dormy House at Gleneagles is already welcoming golfers to the 2014 Ryder Cup venue.
The expanded clubhouse, transformed at a cost of £2.5 million over the winter and overlooking the 18th greens on the famous King’s and Queen’s courses, is counting down to an official opening.
But this week PA Sport enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the latest piece in the hotel’s multi-million-pound jigsaw, coming together in advance of one of the world’s greatest sporting events.
Locker rooms which will host the cream of European and American golfing talent in three years time are, of course, luxurious, with past Gleneagles champions, including Paul Casey and Adam Scott, recognised with personal lockers marking their achievements at the Perthshire venue.
But the extended Dormy House is a welcome haven for golfers and the Big County public to linger over a meal or a drink in the smart bar and grill.
Head pro Russell Smith said: “We are delighted with the way the project is proceeding. The attention to detail has been meticulous and it is going to be a huge asset to Gleneagles and Perthshire.”
Many of the design features echo distinctive themes in the famous hotel, with the entrance featuring a traditional metal port-cochere, or carriage porch, and the 2014 Ryder Cup theme is reflected in a range of branded clothing and the impressive Mitchell Room, accommodating private parties.
It has been named after Abe Mitchell, golf coach to businessman Samuel Ryder, who inspired the Ryder Cup competition.
He was due to captain the first match but had to withdraw because of ill-health. Mitchell went on to feature in two subsequent competitions and he is the figure on top of the instantly recognisable trophy.
The new gents’ locker room has soft furnishings and a wall-mounted television for the latest sports action – ideal for Ryder Cup stars taking in the exploits of friend and foe alike on the PGA Centenary Course.
