NEARLY 100 players took part in this year’s successful annual five-day King James VI/Ness Motors Golf Week, writes Gordon Bannerman.
More than half the entrants came from as far afield as Shetland and Whickham in Newcastle, and included the usual loyal band of regulars from Downfield and Camperdown Golf Clubs in Dundee.
Despite the fall-out effects of Hurricane Katia and heavy rain, the qualifying rounds saw some reasonable scoring, along with a few horror stories.
King James VI members performed well in the knock-out stages and figured prominently in the match play finals in all three sections.
In a closely fought 36-hole Scratch Final, young Keiran Urquhart from Camperdown Golf Club edged out Fraser Inglis of King James VI
The Scratch to 12 Handicap Final was another close affair between Geoff Forster of Whickham Golf Club and King Jimmy’s own Alan Duff, with the Whickham debutant claiming the trophy.
The 13-24 Handicap Final was an all King Jimmy affair and Donald Robertson, who regularly saves his best golf of the season for the Golf Week, lifted the trophy with a victory over Martin Anderson.
Club captain John Pettigrew said: “The King James VI Golf Week is always very well attended and is one of the first fixtures placed into our annual diary.
“We have many visitors who base themselves in local hotels for the week, so not only do we as a club benefit, but the local economy gets a little boost too.
“Already, we have bookings in for next year.”
