Rugby Development Diary

WELL, what an amazing weekend was had at the club.

Allan Brown and Ali Anderson began planning a beer festival last year and it grew into a fantastic weekend festival of rugby which really lifted the profile of Perthshire Rugby Club, not just in rugby circles, but amongst the people of Perth.

The weekend included a 7s tournament, a golden oldies (over 35) tournament, as well as an international mini and midi festival which saw teams from England and France fight it out with Perth and Hillfoots on the North Inch.

The main event was the beer festival held on the North Inch on Saturday evening which was aimed at raising much needed funds for the Community Development Program now entering its 10th year, and I would like to give my personal thanks to both Ali and Allan for their effort and achievement.

In terms of club activity, all age groups are now in their off season and have earned a well deserved break with teams at U15, 16 and 18 reaching finals in either the Caledonia Cup or Shield with the U16s going the whole way and beating Dundee in the final.

Clive Williamson has decided to take a step back from coaching after this very successful year with the U16s but volunteers like Clive are hard to come by so I'm sure I can convince him to carry on.

Schools rugby is still in full swing though with Perth High and Academy cluster primary schools receiving their P6 and 7 taster sessions at the moment in the build up to their festivals in the coming weeks with close to 1000 pupils taking part.

Also this month will see the inter-school 7s return at S1 and 2 with both Perth High and Perth Academy hoping to successfully retain their crowns in respective competitions.

Touch in the Park is coming back on May 27 and we already have six teams signed up the touch rugby league which has become an annual event on the North Inch.

The competition runs every Friday for six weeks with a social and super team trophy up for grabs.

All those interested in entering a team should contact me on 07545817529.

Finally, Street Rugby will make a welcome return to the streets of Perth.

An initiative run in partnership with the justice department in Perth, we go out to localities in the city providing sport as a diversionary tool for young people, keep your eyes here for upcoming dates and venues.
