Popular road race is back ... but takes a new route

AFTER an absence of one year, the popular Perth 10k will resume under a different organisation with a new route – but organisers still need assistance on the day and a meeting has been arranged for Monday in Perth.

The date for the diary is August 31, with the start and the finish being staged at the George Duncan Athletics Track.

Perth and Kinross Sport’s Council have added this event to the list they support throughout the year.

The organisation is made up of tireless volunteers with support from officers from Education and Children’s Services and the council’s Sport’s Development Unit.

Perth and Kinross Sports Council supports sports and sports participants from a grassroots level to talented athletes and the Perth 10k is an event that caters for every type of athlete or fun runner.

The route differs from the usual one between the two Perth Inches.

The main reason is that it’s hard to attract volunteers to handle registration, marshal or to staff the water stations and on top of that the protection and support of Perth police is required.

There will be the usual Fun Run, which will start at 2.30pm, an hour and a half after the start of the 10k.

Strathtay Harriers and Perth Road Runners have tried out the route and have given it the thumbs up.

Councillor Bob Ellis has appealed for more volunteers to come forward and ensure the success of the event.

“We have had quite a bit of support already but will need more. The more we have, the less work for all concerned,” he said.

A meeting has been arranged for Monday evening in Bell’s Sport’s Centre, starting at 7.15pm. It will only take one hour.
